The 35 year old film star Tobey Maguire is at the center of an illegal gambling investigation. Brad Ruderman, who is the former CEO of Ruderman Capital Partners, is currently in prison serving a sentence in connection to a wire fraud conviction. His lawyer says that Maguire won more than $40 million during the illegal gambling activities that his clients ran. Now, Ruderman wants to get some of Maguire’s ill gotten gains back. Several other Hollywood actors have been named.
The pending legal action was filed against Maguire in Los Angeles Bankruptcy Court. Although Ruderman will remain imprisoned until the year 2018, he and his lawyers believe that several prominent actors owe him for their role in his illegal gambling activities. Ruderman alleges that he used money received by clients to fund the gambling ring. When Maguire and other actors won jackpots, he became unable to pay his debts.
Ruderman goes on to detail how the gambling ring worked. Rooms were rented in expensive Hollywood hotels and stars such as Leonardo Dicaprio showed up to hedge their bets. To back up his claims, Ruderman has supplied the courts with cancelled checks made out to Maguire. Although Maguire does not deny that he had a relationship with Ruderman, he claims that the payments had nothing to do with illegal gambling.
Although criminal charges have not been filed, the FBI is investigating Ruderman’s claims. By launching legal action against Maguire, Ruderman may face more additional criminal charges and might have to serve a longer prison sentence.
