Dallas NBA Championships Leads To 14 Arrests

Police are well equipped to handle rowdy fans after sports events, but after the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA National Championships on their home turf, 14 arrests ensued. Because authorities were on high alert, they were able to stop the crowd from destroying property. Most suspects were charged with public intoxication, but four between with active warrants were detained after they attracted the attention of police.

After spectators at the American Airlines Center began to exit, police reported to the AT&T Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Because there was an outdoor projection screen at the AT&T Plaza, fans had begun to come together, police were able to prevent disorderly fans from causing riots. In total, 14 arrests were made, but Assistant Chief Vince Golbeck believes that authorities acted appropriately and assisted in keeping the peace.

For years, police have been alerted before sporting events because of rioting. In Canada, flash mob assembled, even though no sports team were competing nearby. Although police cannot be everywhere, Businesses have installed surveillance cameras and asked police to help them to identify perpetrators, but few arrests are usually made.

After the festivities ended at American Airlines Centers, police reported that no major property damage was done. Even in the hours after crowds dispersed, no crimes were committed off site. Other law enforcement departments may look to the Dallas Police Department for help on dealing with their issues with crimes that occur during sports events. All 14 of the individuals arrested were able to bond out the following day.
