What
Should I Do if My Child is Arrested?
A
juvenile offense carries serious consequences, not only for the child but for
the parents and other family members involved. Astrab Legal Services is dedicated to
effectively and aggressively litigating and defending youth charged with a
delinquency offense. Using an attorney
skilled in Juvenile Court matters could mean the difference in a child’s
future.
Michael
K. Astrab has handled hundreds of matters in the Juvenile Court over the years,
ranging from Trespass to Murder prosecutions.
He understands that in many situations good kids make bad decisions. Unfortunately, if not handled properly, these
bad decisions could haunt them for the rest of their lives. The goal of Astrab Legal Services is to
preserve the reputation and future livelihood of our juvenile clients.
The
juvenile justice system differs greatly from the adult system and it is crucial
that you as a parent or guardian take immediate proactive measures to minimize
your child’s contact with the system. Astrab
Legal Services handles matters in all Northeast Ohio Juvenile Courts, including
but not limited to Cuyahoga County, Medina County, Summit County, Lake County,
Ashland County and Lorain County.
If you have the ability to speak to a
child in police custody, please make sure that the following items are made
crystal clear to them:
·
They
should not make any statements to police officers regarding the offense(s) for which
they have been arrested (in Ohio police may interrogate without the presence of
parents or guardians) and should politely tell the officers that they would
like to speak with an attorney before making any statements. As the parent/guardian you should also make
this clear to any law enforcement officer with whom you have contact.
·
They
should not speak about their charges with anyone, including anyone arrested
with them, any staff members at the detention facility or any other juveniles
at the detention facility.
·
They
should remain polite and respectful of the police and detention facility
officials at all times, regardless of their belief regarding the merit of the
charges which caused them to be detained.
